Tideway

Global Good Company of the Year Sponsor

While London’s Victorian sewers are still in excellent condition, the city’s growing population means they are full to capacity and regularly spill raw sewage into the River Thames. Tideway is the company building London’s new ‘super sewer’, a 25km tunnel from west to east London that will prevent sewage pollution in the river and help create a cleaner, healthier environment for London. With 24 sites across London, construction started in 2016 and is due for completion in 2025.

We want to do things differently, and sustainability is at the heart of everything we do. Throughout our construction, Tideway is working on multiple sustainability areas. For example, we are bringing more women into the engineering and construction industries; we are using the river for transportation of 90 per cent of materials and spoil, reducing the number of HGV’s on London’s roads; employing people living in the boroughs where we have construction sites; and setting targets on employing apprentices and ex-offenders.

Tideway is a founding partner in the Thames Skills Academy, which trains the next generation of river workers and raises river safety standards. We also help set up the charity, Mates in Mind, which aims to improve mental wellbeing in the construction industry, by encouraging a male dominated workforce to ’start the conversation’.

Our inclusivity network, Encompass, works to ensure that everyone can bring their whole selves to work. Our network strives to make our workplace as inclusive as possible to everyone—gender, race, LGBTQ+ and disability—setting new standards in the industry for future infrastructure projects.

At Tideway, our objective is to ‘Reconnect London with the River Thames’ and we are working to inspire people to engage more with river activities. We have formed long term partnerships with two river-based charities: Thames21 which engages communities in protecting the river from plastic pollution; and London Youth Rowing, which inspires young people to get active through rowing and help develop their confidence and skills.
