Greenpeace is urging consumers to track their plastic footprint in an effort to reduce the amount of throwaway plastic going into landfill as well as ending up in the ocean.
While acknowledging that plastic is everywhere in daily lives, the organisation wants the public to become more aware of just how much plastic packaging they throw away in an effort to force businesses to take responsibility for the amount of plastic they’re producing.
Greenpeace insists that the campaign isn’t about trying to avoid plastic altogether. “But it is about trying to do what you can to reduce the demand for plastic production. And a great place to start is with throwaway plastic packaging,” it states.
The environmental group takes heart in the fact that since the plastic bag charge was introduced in the UK, use has dropped by up to 85% and many people in the UK now carry reusable shopping bags.
