Late last year, the government launched a series of consultations to overhaul the UK’s waste system and one focus is how best to simplify the existing complicated recycling system. It is also seeking views on introducing a Deposit Return Scheme for cans and bottles, as well as the introduction of tax on plastic packaging.
Current ideas being considered include making packaging producers pay for the full cost of dealing with their waste and a consistent set of materials collected across England from households for recycling.
Any changes will make up a key part of the government’s upcoming Environment Bill, to be introduced early in the second session of Parliament.
The consultation closes on 13th May.
