Waitrose lauded for excellence in farm animal welfare
Waitrose & Partners has been voted Best Retailer in Europe for farm animal welfare at the Compassion in World Farming (CiWF) Good Farm Animal Welfare Awards for a record third year in a row, an unprecedented achievement that saw it beat competition from 27 other retailers from across Europe, including 10 from the UK and others from France, Italy, Germany and Scandinavia.
The Best Retailer Award demonstrates the company’s exceptional farm animal welfare policies and the work of its farmers to ensure the best living conditions for its broiler chickens, laying hens, pigs, dairy cows and calves. Waitrose has led the awards field for more than a decade.
In addition to Best Retailer, Waitrose & Partners also picked up the Best Retailer Marketing Award for the second time; this given to the retailer that is judged to be the best at communicating farm animal welfare policies and standards to consumers.
In receiving the award, the food retailer was particularly commended for its ‘Waitrose & Partners’ rebrand campaign, which placed its Agriculture and Aquaculture Managers at the heart of its in-store, above the line and digital marketing campaigns.
Duncan Sinclair, agriculture manager at Waitrose & Partners, comments: “It’s a huge honour to receive these awards, and to win the Best Retailer award once again is a particularly proud accomplishment.”
“It takes a lot of passion, dedication and hard work to maintain the high standards we have become famous for over the past 30 years, and we owe a considerable amount to the longstanding relationships we have with our farmers and our processors for building that reputation. Without their loyalty and commitment, our pursuit and retention of such pioneering animal welfare standards would not be possible and we share these accolades with them.”
Dr Tracey Jones, director of food business from Compassion in World Farming, added: We’ve been working closely with Waitrose for many years now and have been impressed by their consistent determination to be the best when it comes to farm animal welfare. They continually strive to do what is right, both for the animals and for their customers, making them true leaders in Europe and they justly deserve the title of Best Retailer. I extend my congratulations to everyone in their team and look forward to working closely with Waitrose in the year ahead.”
