On her recent trip to India, National CSR Awards’ Founder, Karen Sutton, addressed the World CSR Day conference and won an award for CSR excellence, visited Doorstep School (supported by one of judges, Seema Sharma), SOS Children Villages (all in Mumbai) before heading to Goa to celebrate a milestone birthday…
It was while Karen was staying at the beautiful Taj Holiday Village in Candolim that she became aware of the real horrors of plastic waste in the ocean and on the beaches.
“I was so horrified that while on a boat trip to Grande Island, I spent an hour picking up glass and plastic bottles. I was surrounded by people who were drinking from beer and water bottles and discarding them right there and then – right in front of me!” recalls Karen.
“I know that the Indian Prime Minister launched a campaign in 2014 called My Clean India, but it’s certainly not getting through to the public. These were middle class citizens, paying for a daytrip out and clearly had no understanding of the effect their actions have on the ocean, the planet and indeed themselves.”
Karen’s full blog on her recent experience will be posted shortly.
