Best Individual Community Project (Large)

WINNER: London Stansted

PROJECT: A pioneering community partnership to reduce aircraft noise

The Project…

Aircraft noise is a recurring community concern. Taking 5 years from design to introduction, Stansted has demonstrated a pioneering approach to noise, showing how ‘performance navigation technologies’, using satellite navigation, can dramatically reduce the number of people impacted by noise. The closer and more accurately an aircraft flies to its designated flight path, the fewer people it flies over and exposes to noise. This technology is currently untested in the UK. In partnership with local communities and airlines, Stansted developed a trial to explore this solution.

The results represent an impressive 84% reduction in local people overflown by our aircraft.
