Less Keynote, More Musical Notes to Inspire at GGAs Ceremony
We have the pleasure of welcoming award-winning environmental campaigner, best-selling author and speaker, Natalie Fee, as a special guest at the Global Good Awards ceremony this year.
Rather than the more traditional keynote speech, in a first at the Global Good Awards, Natalie will inspire our audience through songs she and her husband, Angus Barr, have written especially for our event. We think guests will agree Natalie is indeed “the embodiment of glee”, as described in a review by the Barefoot Doctor, Stephen Russell.
The Path to Preventing Plastic Pollution
Early career success in IT recruitment didn’t bring outright fulfilment for Natalie. Curious, she embarked on a voyage of discovery. Natalie travelled the world, trained as a yoga teacher, became a life coach and columnist before settling in Bristol to pursue a media career in TV production and presenting.
Light Bulb Moment
In 2014, having clocked up over 200 hours on primetime TV, Natalie watched a three-minute trailer for the film ‘Albatross’ by Chris Jordan. The heart-breaking scenes of Laysan albatross chicks dying from ingested ocean plastic moved her to take action and make a difference.
Natalie said: “I think it was something about seeing everyday items that I used – my brand of toothbrush, ink cartridges, bottle caps – causing the death of something so beautiful – that just floored me. And I knew in that moment I couldn’t just sit back and allow this to happen.”
The following year, Natalie founded City to Sea, an environmental campaigning organisation that promotes solutions to stop marine plastic pollution at source. She put together a fantastic team who masterminded a series of effective and inspiring campaigns to change attitudes and reduce plastic pollution. City to Sea quickly achieved a global reach, leading change.
Awards & Accolades
Natalie won the Sheila McKechnie Award for Environmental Justice in 2017 for City to Sea’s #SwitchtheStick campaign. There were more accolades in 2018. City to Sea’s Refill app won the Global Good Award for Best Environmental Behavioural Change. And Natalie was proud to have been named Bristol 24/7’s Woman of the Year for 2018. That same year, she was listed as one of the UK’s ‘50 New Radicals’ by The Observer / Nesta and awarded an Honorary Degree of Doctor of Science in recognition of her services to the environment by the University of the West of England.
In 2019, Natalie won the Sunday Times Volvo Visionaries Award for her campaign work. She also sits on the Bristol Advisory Committee for Climate Change.
