#PoweroftheTide launches online petition
UK Tidal Energy has launched a campaign to garner 100,000 petition signatures that will help reinstate tidal energy subsidies from government, therefore ensuring a greener and more prosperous future for the country.
Tidal stream energy is a highly predictable form of hydropower which harnesses the movement of the ocean’s tides, using turbines to produce abundant, clean, renewable energy. Despite the UK having abundant tidal resources that can provide clean energy 24 hours a day, forever, campaigners say it is being underutilised.
To meet the challenge of climate change, the campaign believes that the UK needs to develop these renewable energies. It points out that, as the global leader in the tidal energy industry, the UK could also secure marked economic benefits – with the opportunity to capture £76 billion of the potential market. The UK has 50% of Europe’s capacity to create tidal stream energy which will help reduce the UK’s carbon emissions by 2050 and have at least 23,500 new jobs by 2050.
“For the last five years I have been working to kick start the tidal stream industry. Without the much needed subsidies removed by the government in 2016, it will be incredibly difficult for tidal stream energy to obtain the investment to replicate the success seen by solar and wind industries. Britain and the world need additional renewable energy industries to replace the carbon based systems. It is crucial that any incoming government seeks to take the lead on tidal or we risk delay and other countries gaining market share ahead of the UK,” comments Rear Admiral Rob Stevens, Chairman, Perpetuus Tidal Energy Centre Ltd.
